At our clinic, we have two different blood analyzers that enable us to carry out comprehensive blood tests. We can examine various parameters such as kidney and liver function, protein levels, blood sugar, and electrolyte balance. Additionally, we can measure the number of red and white blood cells to check for potential anemia or signs of inflammation. Lastly, we are also able to perform a number of specific tests in-house, such as thyroid function testing in cats.
Urinalysis is often underestimated, yet it can provide a wealth of valuable information. For example, we can assess the concentration level (how diluted the urine is), the presence of blood, crystals, or abnormal cells, and—if we have a sterile sample—the presence of bacteria. Depending on the specific issue, we determine whether a sterile urine sample is required (in which case we collect it by inserting a small needle into the bladder) or whether you can collect the urine at home yourself.
If abnormal stool is observed, we can perform what is known as a Giardia test at the clinic. Giardia is an intestinal parasite that occurs very frequently, especially in young animals. For this test, we require a small stool sample collected over the course of three days. If a more extensive analysis of the stool is needed, we will send the sample to an external laboratory.
Cytology (“the study of cells”) is primarily performed in cases of skin and ear problems. We collect a sample, stain it using a specific dye, and then examine the cells under a microscope. This process is very helpful in determining the appropriate treatment, such as which ear ointment, shampoo, or antibiotic to prescribe.
Almost all of these tests are completed within an hour, allowing us to discuss the results with you on the same day and immediately begin a treatment plan!
If specific tests need to be conducted, we send the samples to an external laboratory. In that case, the results may take a bit longer, depending on the type of test that needs to be performed.
